The Sunshine Makers"The Sunshine Makers" is a classic from the golden age of animation. This restored print is the highest quality available, and is from the DVD, Toddle Tales & Rainbow Parade Cartoons.

"The Sunshine Makers" is also one of Adi Da's favorite cartoons, because of its depiction of Light and Happiness (magnified and spread by the "Sunshine gnomes" in the cartoon) dissolving and outshining the force of egoity (the "gloomies").

Many times throughout His life, Avatar Adi Da Samraj prepared His devotees to rightly understand the significance of His human lifetime: the fact that it would inevitably come to an end at some point; and that the primary purpose of His life and work was to establish the means necessary for all future generations to be able to link up with Him, making the Way of Adidam available to all in perpetuity. This section explores these topics through Adi Da's Own Word, stories from devotees and non-devotees, and articles.

31. The Sign of Open Hands

From our section, FAQs about Adi Da and Adidam

You will sometimes see devotees with their palms raised and facing forward. Adi Da Samraj gave us the open hand as a sign of relatedness — in contrast with the closed fist, the sign of the ego. The Gesture of Beholding is a particular expression of open-handedness, where we express our non-separation from the Divine, and our recognition of Adi Da as the Divine.

34. The Universal World-Prayer

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 3:32, 2807 views.

The Universal World-Prayer

Beloved, Inmost Heart of every heart,
do not Let our human hearts be broken
by our merely mortal suffering here —
but Make our mortal human hearts break-Free
to an unconditional love of You,
that we may, Thus, love all living beings
with Love's own True, and Truly broken, Heart.

Composed by Jacqueline Clemons and Nick Milo, and sung by Jacqueline Clemons, this soulful rendition of Adi Da's prayer for world peace, "The Universal World-Prayer", was sung many times at The Parliament of the World's Religions in Cape Town, South Africa, in December, 1999.

The song accompanies a slideshow of pictures of Adi Da.

The song can be found on Jacqueline's album, In the Garden of Fear-No-More.

For more on how Adi Da created The Universal World-Prayer, read our article on the celebration of The Great Sovereign-Avataric Holy Day of Eternally Established World-Blessing.

Adi Da's Universal World-Prayer coincides with His Instructions to not "live the Law backwards": trying to love others (or attempting to bring about world peace), while failing to first love God (and have our love of others be the overflow of our communion with God).

41. The Unity of Humankind

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 9:46, 2640 views.

The Unity of HumankindExcerpt from the Avataric Discourse of August 22, 2004.

Adi Da describes how humankind is a single family, a single species in "diaspora" — dispersed across the earth as the result of migrations from a single point of origin (in Africa) thousands of years ago. Making much of superficial differences due to race, nation, religion, language, tribe, political system, etc. obscures this more fundamental, deeper reality of the unity of humankind. For the sake of everyone's survival, humankind must begin to live on the basis of its unity, and establish a global cooperative order that includes and serves everyone.

47. The Way of Fun

An audio clip from DAbase in our Audio/Video Library — length: 54:00, 4102 listens.

The Way of FunAdi Da's very humorous and wonderfully instructive talk from 1987, The Way Of Fun, about how, after being around His devotees, He "finally got it", that "it's time for the Siddhas" to adapt to modern times, "time for the Truth to change". This new way ("The Way of Fun") — for realizing God without requiring self-transcendence — will "require nothing of you except to really dig those Divine Vibes." The talk is Adi Da's masterful reflection of how the ego is always trying to revise the Way into something that is self-fulfilling rather than self-transcending, something that has no requirements and no difficulties, and that takes no time at all. "So whatever kind of association you have with Me . . . as long as it's fun, you're happy to do it. But if it requires anything of you, your resistance comes on immediately."

For more on this theme, read our article, The Way of the Bone.

The Bodily Location of HappinessThis is a video excerpt from Adi Da's classic talk, "The Bodily Location of Happiness", which He gave on November 28, 1981. This talk was originally published in the book, The Bodily Location Of Happiness. The full talk is available on CD.

The talk communicates several core insights:
  1. Everybody is intuitively familiar with happiness.
  2. Adi Da's "Lesson of Life":"You can't become happy; you can only be (already) happy."
  3. The Transmission of the Divine Guru is How One Locates Happiness.
  4. It is a Process of Whole Bodily Location.

From our section, Crazy Wisdom and "The Way That I Teach"

In 1999, Avatar Adi Da spoke in summary terms about the Teaching years. Based on a compilation of those communications, He created this 'Open Letter' addressed to everyone - about how He Taught, the reason for Crazy Wisdom, the nature of Spiritual Instruction, Realization, and the requirements for true Liberation. Presented here are major portions of the complete letter. The full letter is published as a booklet by The Dawn Horse Press.

What is the total process of human growth? What is the fullest extent of our potential? Avatar Adi Da Samraj offers a framework of seven stages of life, which represents His Wisdom on the entire spectrum of human possibility. He has systematically described not only our physical, emotional, and mental development, but also all the phases of Spiritual, Transcendental, and Divine unfolding that are potential in us, once we are mature in ordinary, human terms.

A video clip from SpiritLight Videos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 4:34, 1011 views.

The Master's Eyes"The Master's Eyes" is from Van Morrison's 1985 album, A Sense of Wonder.

How the light shone from the master
How the light shone from the master
How the light shone from the master's eyes.

Oh how the truth shone, from the master
How the truth shone, from the master
How the truth shone, from the master's eyes.

Why didn't they leave us to wander through buttercup summers?
Why didn't they leave us to wander when there was no other?

And my questions all were answered
When the light shone from the master
When the light shone, from the master's eyes.

From the master's eyes.
Oh how the light shone from the master
How the light shone from the master
How the light shone from the master's eyes.

68. Adi Da as First, Last, and Only Seventh Stage Adept

From our section, Spiritual Recognition of Adi Da

Shortly after His Re-Awakening in September, 1970, Adi Da began a decades-long consideration (concluded finally in 1993) about whether there had been any other seventh stage Realizers among all the great Spiritual Masters throughout history. In this article, we lay out Adi Da's search for a historical precedent. This consideration would first lead Him to a greatly clarified set of criteria for assessing whether the teaching and life story of a great Realizer or Master indicated that they were in the seventh stage of life. Ultimately, it led Him to conclude that He was in fact the first such Realizer; and further, that He was the first, last, and only seventh stage Adept.

In this episode of Vajra Body Vajra Mind, we discuss James' life with Adi Da. We talk about the practice of Guru Yoga, challenges in reading Adi Da's Teaching, anti-Guru sentiment in contemporary culture, sexuality in spirituality, the importance of discipline in the Way of Adidam, the unique Transmission of Adi Da's Revelation and Presence (through photographs, videos, Image-Art, etc), resistance to the Guru by the ego, positive disillusionment (aka "the Lesson of Life"), and more.

Your words really open the heart and mind to Who our Great World Teacher, Adi Da Samraj, Is; and to His great Offering for all of humankind (which will always be); and what it was like to be in His Company as we all first approached Him so naively; and how hard He worked to turn us to the Great One. This witness must always be a part of our collective history and present offering. It was so refreshing to hear you speak to people who had understanding of spiritual traditions, but still had a great many questions about Adi Da. The soundtrack for the slideshow and Darshan is Jacqueline Clemons singing her and Nick Milo's composition, Universal World-Prayer, which sets to music the words of Adi Da:

Beloved, Inmost Heart of every heart,
do not Let our human hearts be broken
by our merely mortal suffering here —
but Make our mortal human hearts break-Free
to an unconditional love of You,
that we may, Thus, love all living beings
with Love's own True, and Truly broken, Heart.

An audio clip from AdidamRevelationMagazine in our Audio/Video Library — length: 5:35, 3741 listens.

The Avon Lady, excerpt 1"The Avon Lady" is a classic talk given by Avatar Adi Da in the early years of His Teaching-Work. In this humorous and penetrating discourse, Avatar Adi Da offers basic instruction regarding the nature of seeking and the Awakening Function of the True Guru.

In this audio excerpt entitled “There Is Already No Dilemma”, Avatar Adi Da describes the human egoic drama of separation, suffering, and seeking. All pleasures, distractions, and experiences reinforce that same drama of the apparently separate self. But the True Guru does not support the search, does not promise any fulfillment of that search. That is the uniqueness and the invaluable quality of the True Guru. Adi Da compares the True Guru to an unusual elevator – where one steps in, expecting to go up (toward Spiritual attainment or some other fulfillment), but instead the bottom drops out. This is why the search begins to fall apart once there is recognition of the True Guru. Then the real Spiritual process can begin.

Limitation on LoveAdi Da talking to devotees in New Zealand in 1988.

He responds to a devotee who is wanting to go beyond his "limitation on love". Adi Da makes the point that this is not possible merely via idealism and will. One's current limit on love is due to an as yet uninspected resistance to love. Only through self-understanding (and disciplines that serve self-understanding) can one transcend this limit.

An audio clip from DawnHorsePress in our Audio/Video Library — length: 3:31, 2394 listens.

I Will Do EverythingAn audio excerpt from Adi Da's talk, "I Will Do Everything". This talk, and the talk, "Guru, Faith, and Divine Communion", are now available on a CD from the Dawn Horse Press.

In these two talks, Adi Da beautifully illuminates the nature of the relationship to the Spiritual Master. This sacred relationship to the Guru is the direct means by which the Divine Principle becomes operative in one's life.

As feeling-attention is magnified toward the Spiritual Master —through the force of attraction, of love, of devotion — the reactive forces and habits that drive one's egoic life begin to lose their force, and the Divine becomes the Mover and Principle of one's life.

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 12:41, 1965 views.

The Guru Is SufficientIn this rare historical footage from 1973, Adi Da speaks about the relationship with the Guru in Satsang (the Company of the Awakened One) as the Way of Truth, and Reality Itself.

Adi Da: "During My 'Sadhana Years', whenever My Guru asked Me to do something, I would do that. The rest of the time, I would sit there and be absorbed in Him. And there was nothing else I could do. The Guru is sufficient — and the devotee of the Guru is one who knows that."

The occasion of the talk was a Prasad Day on July 15, 1973. This talk, originally recorded on reel-to-reel film, was given by Adi Da in Los Angeles, California — beginning at the Ashram center on Melrose Avenue and then moving to the backyard of a devotee’s house — only a year after His formal Teaching-Work began.

The full talk is available on the DVD, The Guru Is Sufficient.

93. What Is Doubt?

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 13:25, 1638 views.

What Is Doubt? In 1986, Adi Da made His first visit to the European community of His devotees. He travelled through England, France and Holland. In the South of Holland, in the village of Maria Hoop close to the German border, a former Catholic monastery was found which could be rented for a few weeks. Devotees swiftly cleaned buildings and the grounds. Adi Da stayed in a specially prepared wing of the monastery for several days. During this time, He granted Darshan and held "Question and Answer" occasions in the chapel (now called Adi Da Kapel) with German, English, Dutch, French and American devotees. The former monastery has since been acquired by the European community of Adidam and is now known as The European Danda.

In this rare, never before published excerpt from one of the "Question and Answer" occasions, Adi Da addresses the primal human emotion of doubt in a most direct and simple manner. He describes how doubt is not ultimately a sign that we have been "betrayed" in some way. The radical solution to doubt is to identify with the Divine Itself, beyond the temporary cycles of the body and mind and beyond the sense of being a separate self.

96. Happenine Book Recitation

A video clip from AdiDaUpClose in our Audio/Video Library — length: 3:01, 331 views.

Happenine Book RecitationAdi Da wrote The Happenine Book in 2006. It is the last and longest book of The Orpheum Trilogy. Like the earlier books in the Trilogy, The Mummery Book and The Scapegoat Book, The Happenine Book recounts Raymond's life, teaching, and revelation, but this time through a posthumous collection of manuscripts and tape recordings, augmented by the Great Sage's paintings, drawings, and photographs. This collection, left behind by Raymond "for all of us to find", presents a kaleidoscope of narrative and non-narrative forms ranging stylistically from traditional to postmodern, each embodied as space-time capsules of experience, or "happens", the identification with which is an illusory presumption of the separate "self" and therefore a fundamental error of human beings, which must be transcended.

Adi Da recited the entire Happenine Book over the course of April and May in 2006. This is an excerpt from those recitations, accompanied by a slide show of photographs of Adi Da's Life and Work.

As I first went around the house during the puja, the person's grief came flying out and then at the end when I could feel that more was needed, my attention went up to the loft and a huge about of anger released. I learned later that the person who died in there had loved to spend time in the loft but couldn't after she became worse. I lived in. . . [cont.]"

A video clip from Matt Braithwaite in our Audio/Video Library — length: 14:19, 2936 views.

Dancing on the Bridge of the WorldOn the evening of July 24, 2014, The Florence Dance Company performed the multimedia dance event, Quattro Maggiore ("Four Seasons") — set to the music of Vivaldi (his most well-known work, "Quattro Maggiore", performed live) and the art of Adi Da Samraj. The performance was called "Dancing on the Bridge of the World", because it took place on the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval multi-arch bridge over the Arno River in Florence, Italy. The Ponte Vecchio is one of the most historic bridges in the world, and the earliest bridge at this spot is believed to have been built in Roman times.

The video shows devotees preparing and transporting Adi Da's Image-Art to the Ponte Vecchio, followed by clips of the performance itself. The video also includes after-performance interviews with devotees Hanneke Vlaar (patron of the European Danda's Bright Room Gallery, the world's largest standing collection of Adi Da's Image-Art), Matt Braithwaite, and Ruchiradama Nadikanta.

Sex, Laughter, and Real-God-RealizationAudio excerpt from Adi Da's talk, "Sex, Laughter, and Real-God-Realization" (now available on CD).

Sexuality, humor, and Awakening to the Divine Condition are three forms of ecstasy, or unbounded feeling, that disrupt the conventional sense of “order” in society. Pleasure undoes the body. Humor undoes the mind. And Realization undoes the sense of “self”. The Fullness of Real-God-Realization Comprehends and Transcends the limitations of social norms, spiritual presumptions, and self-identification, granting the capability of Real Happiness and True Freedom.

Prior UnityLeo Burke is Professor and Director of the Global Commons Initiative at the Mendoza College of Business, the University of Notre Dame. In this capacity he teaches courses on the commons to undergraduates, MBAs and Executive MBAs. From December 2000 through June 2008, he served as Associate Dean and Director of Executive Education. In 2009, he co-founded the Anthroposphere Institute, with Carolyn Lee and Kathy Skerritt.

In this video, Leo talks about the new book, Prior Unity, containing Adi Da's wisdom about world peace, cooperative community, and much more. Prior Unity follows on the wisdom in Adi Da's Not-Two Is Peace, containing excerpts from the earlier book as well as much new material.

This book’s message is that the impulse to peaceful, cooperative coexistence is humanity's "true north". The impulse comes from our root-intelligence as one single species, and, at the same time, reflects the inherent unity of all life. Leo emphasizes the necessity for an approach based on this prior unity, if there is to be a sustainable future for planet earth.

Prior Unity is brought to you by The Adi Da Foundation.

108. The Coincidence of All Phenomena

A video clip from CDBaby in our Audio/Video Library — length: 9:56, 480 views.

The Coincidence of All PhenomenaThis video excerpt is an excerpt from Adi Da's talk, "The Bridge To God", from October 27, 1980. (The full talk, "The Bridge To God", is available as a CD and as an online transcript.)

On the previous day, a shaman from Mexico visited The Mountain Of Attention, Avatar Adi Da Samraj’s Northern California sanctuary. The following day, Avatar Adi Da considered with His devotees the inherently magical nature of the world and our psychic relationship to it.

Adi Da: "The world is a psychic phenomenon. In other words, we never experience the world except psychically. We never experience it except as knowledge and perception. We never experience it except as a condition that includes us. We are not separate from it. What we are at the level of the psyche and at the level of consciousness is just as much an inherent part of the world as the so-called material, objective forms. When we associate with the world on the basis of the totality of all the conditions of our existence, we participate in the world of forms as a psychic process. By participating psychically in the psychic phenomena of the world, we learn the laws whereby we can influence the phenomena of the waking state. We generate a process wherein we can become sensitive to the phenomena of the waking state so that we can observe unusual coincidences of form and psychic significances that our verbal mind tends to exclude from what we are observing."

This excerpt is track 3 of the CD, Science and the Myth of Materialism, a collection of talks from throughout the 30 years of Avatar Adi Da’s formal Teaching-Work that brings together samples from His vast Divine Instruction relative to the psycho-physical nature of the world, the limits of scientific materialism, and the Inherent Unity of Existence.

The album is available through iTunes, Microsoft, and The Dawn Horse Press.

An audio clip from DawnHorsePress in our Audio/Video Library — length: 2:20, 1713 listens.

God Is Not in ChargeAn audio excerpt from the CD, God Is Not In Charge.

Have you ever wondered:

  • Is God a Being, or the Being, taking care of everyone?
  • If there is a God, then why isn't God obviously just in charge?
  • Why do individuals who don't believe in God very often seem to have a relatively enjoyable life, and believers just as frequently suffer?
  • If God is a Parent-Force, then why doesn't the commitment to God bring into your life evidence that you are being protected and sustained?

These are some of the questions that Avatar Adi Da considers with devotees participating with Him in the gatherings from the 1980's presented on this CD. What unfolds is a lively consideration that you too can participate in, wherever or whenever you are, by listening to this CD.

Camels Of The SacredVideo clip of the camels in Sacred Camel Gardens at The Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary, in January, 2014.

Sacred Camel Gardens Director Stuart Camps writes: "With a great love for nature and all non-humans, Adi Da has a particular fondness for camels. We don't train the camels with conventional methods. Instead, we build relationships with them, similar to the relationships they build with each other. We also hold retreats and seminars for others to visit and experience being around such friendly camels up close. This video is a simple celebration of Adi Da's wish for these camels to become a major aspect of the sacred culture developing around His Spiritual Presence."

Adi Da: "I have always envisioned The Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary being characterized by camels. I want to have the camels be a major aspect of The Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary, one of its special characteristics. I want camels pervading the Sanctuary."

Conversion To The GuruAn audio excerpt from the CD, Conversion to the Guru.

On this CD, Avatar Adi Da Samraj masterfully explores the relationship between experience, understanding, and Truth: Experience cannot ever lead to Truth -- but, in the context of the devotional relationship to Avatar Adi Da, experience can serve the crisis of understanding that makes a person available to His Transmission of Truth.

The CD includes Avatar Adi Da's lively recountings of two genuine conversion stories -- one from a modern Christian minister and the other His amusing free-rendering of the story of Ribhu and his disciple Nidhaga (from the Ribhu Gita, an epitome of traditional Non-dualist teachings).
118. The Books of Adidam

119. Capturing a Miracle

A story in our section, Blessings, Miracles, and Extraordinary Evidence

As devotees, our hearts may know when a miracle has occurred through the Grace of Adi Da. But communicating such miracles to non-devotees can be quite a challenge in the twenty-first century! Even so, every once in a while, a time, a place, and an opportunity arise where we can actually 'capture a miracle' — in a manner that might even satisfy a scientist. This is the story (and documentation) of one such occasion.

What a Human DoesThis video describes a new approach (consistent with traditional approaches) to engaging animals, nature, and all life, inspired by Adi Da's wisdom and love for all beings. This approach is being used to nurture the physical, emotional and spiritual lives of the camels at Sacred Camel Gardens at The Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary. The development of this approach (over the last twenty years) has been led by Sacred Camel Gardens director, Stuart Camps, who illustrates the approach in this video.

121. What is Fear of Death?

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 14:09, 761 views.

What is Fear of Death?Throughout the years of His Divine Avataric Teaching-Revelation, Avatar Adi Da spoke at length in response to devotees' questions on all subjects relative to the human circumstance — including death, and all the sorrow and fear inherent in the circumstance of human mortality.

This video excerpt is from an Avataric Discourse given by Adi Da on September 18, 2004. In this Discourse, Adi Da points out that all fear is fear of death or fear of extinction. This fear is like a constant background noise, from which we constantly try to distract ourselves with the games of life. Adi Da describes the choice we face: to live in fear, the "native mood of the ego" — or to realize the profundity of the inherently fearless Condition.

Avatar Adi Da calls us to a surrendered life that is about Realization and all that is relevant to Realization, including compassionate service. Such a surrendered life is the key to an "easy" death.

This excerpt is from track 6 ("Enter the Inherently Fearless Condition") of the two-and-a-half-hour DVD, Easy Death — Discourses on the Ultimate Transcending of Death and Everything Else.

This DVD compilation of ten talks spans thirty-four years of Avatar Adi Da's Work. It includes His compassionate Instruction about:
- the sorrow of loss
- the fear of death
- serving the dying person
- how to practice during and beyond the death process
- the Ultimate Demonstration of Divine Translation (or Most Perfect Realization of the deathless Condition).

From His Perfect Disposition of Absolute Freedom, Avatar Adi Da Samraj reveals the greater process within which death occurs, and the Ultimate Demonstration of What Is, Prior to life and death.

A video clip from Gerald Sheinfeld in our Audio/Video Library — length: 7:13, 440 views.

How I Became Adi Da's DevoteeGerald Sheinfeld, a devotee of Avatar Adi Da since the early 1970's, tells the story of the day he became Adi Da's devotee. It happened about eight months after he first met Adi Da. On that day, Gerald experienced (and was overwhelmed and heart-opened by) Adi Da's absolute vulnerability and complete lack of egoic armoring and received the Revelation of Adi Da's Divine State.

Gerald tells many more stories of his life of more than 45 years with Adi Da on his downloadable album, At the Feet of the Spiritual Master and in his upcoming book of the same name.

From our section, Empowered Places and Things

Until the early 1980's, a German Shepherd named Megan lived with Adi Da at The Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary. Adi Da loved him dearly, and it soon became obvious that Megan wished only to serve his Spiritual Master as devoted friend and protector. He did so for nearly eight years. Daji Megan's burial site is at the entrance to Fear-No-More Zoo, a tangible sign of his guardianship.

A video clip from Mormon Transhumanist Association in our Audio/Video Library — length: 41:02, 2798 views.

Where is Heaven?A video of the talk, "Where is Heaven?", by devotee, professor, and Zen Abbot Michael LaTorra - one of 14 talks by speakers of different religious faiths at the Religion and Transhumanism Conference in Oakland, California, on May 10, 2014. This conference was co-sponsored by the Brighter Brains Institute and the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies, and videoed by the Mormon Transhumanist Association.

Transhumanism is a movement whose goal is to fundamentally transform the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities and overcome present liabilities, including brief lifespan and limits on intelligence (e.g., through integration with artificial intelligence aids or networks).

What transhumanism and religion share is the question: what is the greatest potential (or destiny) for human beings, and how can it be realized (technologically, spiritually, etc.)?

"Heaven" is a popular subject these days - The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Heaven Is for Real, and Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife are all huge, recent bestsellers. Because "heaven" is used in many familiar religions to signify the ultimate human destiny, Mike uses it as his jumping off point for this talk (which introduces the Buddhist view and the Adidam view). He distinguishes different kinds of "heavens", introducing Adi Da's "seven stages of life" framework, the Cosmic Mandala (as a "map" that helps answer the talk's title question), and other esoteric concepts helpful in understanding our ultimate potential. He draws on stories about visiting other realms, from devotees Anne Rogers and Connie Mantas and from Adi Da Himself.

[For a related exploration of these themes of human potential, technology, and spirituality, read our article, We Are Consciousness Itself.]

A video clip from Numinous Involvements Production in our Audio/Video Library — length: 2:49, 420 views.

Prelude to WinterIn 2016, on a summer night in the beautiful city of Florence, the Florence Dance Company performed the multimedia dance event, Quattro Maggiore ("Four Seasons") — set to the music of Vivaldi (his most well-known work, "Quattro Maggiore", performed live) and the art of Adi Da Samraj as the backdrop. Vivaldi's masterpiece has four parts, corresponding to the four seasons. In this newly expanded performance, musical preludes have been added before each season, featuring the musical composition and performance of hang drummer extraordinaire Paolo Borghi of Rome. In this excerpt, we hear Borghi's "Prelude" to Vivaldi's "Winter".

The performance took place on the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval multi-arch bridge over the Arno River in Florence, Italy. The Ponte Vecchio is one of the most historic bridges in the world, and the earliest bridge at this spot is believed to have been built in Roman times.

This performance is in preparation for a planned, fuller performance in 2017.

We're supposed to be devoted to finding out about this external world. We're not supposed to be devoted to participation in a total world in which reality includes not only the objects of perception and conception, but the process of perception and conception, and the being or consciousness in which perception and conception are experienced or recognized."

This talk excerpt is track 2 of the CD, Science and the Myth of Materialism, a collection of talks from throughout the 30 years of Avatar Adi Da’s formal Teaching-Work that brings together samples from His vast Divine Instruction relative to the psycho-physical nature of the world, the limits of scientific materialism, and the Inherent Unity of Existence.

This book is a compact introduction to Avatar Adi Da's Reality-Teaching and Way, and a highly accessible collection of essays from His master work, The Aletheon.

139. Diet as Regenerative Process

A video clip from Wisdom Tools for Humanity in our Audio/Video Library — length: 4:24, 583 views.

Diet as Regenerative ProcessAdi Da gave this talk on May 24, 1983, in Fiji. In it he describes how all processes (including diet) associated with transformation of the body-mind (making it an appropriate yogic vehicle compatible with the Transcendental Spiritual Way of Adidam) necessarily first go through purification and rebalancing phases (for as long as they take) — associated with Fire — before they enter the regeneration phase — associated with Light. Knowing this helps one persist in the fire of the purification and rebalancing phases to the point where one comes out the other side.

The life of devotion to Me Is both a Communion with Light and a Purification by Fire. There may be many years of This Fire-Light in My Divine Avataric Company, and you should welcome all of them.

That commitment to Fire and Light must be your exercise of life — in every moment, and under all circumstances.

Where There Is Light
There Is Heat.
Where There Is Heat
There Is Fire.
Where There Is Fire
There Is Light.

141. Synchronicity

A story in our section, Blessings, Miracles, and Extraordinary Evidence

Chris Tong: I had been reading Adi Da's autobiography, The Knee Of Listening. One of the book's many extraordinary Revelations — The Unity between the internal and external worlds — was a Revelation Adi Da received through profound sadhana [spiritual practice]. And — simply through reading Adi Da's account — I Gracefully was given a form of this same Revelation.

You Are The Question You AskA video excerpt from part 1 ("A Question Too Boring to Answer") of the DVD, You Are The Question You Ask, which was drawn from Adi Da's Avataric Discourse of August 30, 2004.

In addition to some of His most potent Instruction about the nature of devotional turning to Him (previously only available on CD), in this DVD, Avatar Adi Da addresses a broad range of topics including:

  • how questions themselves are a signal of the ego-activity that is at the root of the questioner's suffering and seeking

  • practice in the later phase of life

  • the great potential for unity in this “dark time” of pervasive conflict

  • esoteric and exoteric Christianity

144. Adi Da Recites The Heart of Understanding

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 2:47, 2107 views.

Adi Da Recites The Heart of UnderstandingAdi Da recites "The Heart of Understanding", the Prologue to His autobiography, The Knee Of Listening. The recitation is accompanied by photos of Adi Da.

"The Heart of Understanding" is extraordinarily good news: death itself can be transcended! Death is not a problem, and is utterly acceptable, if one realizes and stands as Consciousness Itself, in which all mortal forms and limited worlds are arising.

In the final words of "The Heart of Understanding", Adi Da reveals that He is That: Consciousness Itself. Because this is so, He transmits that Revelation to all beings, and provides (and is) the means whereby all of us finally can be free of mortality and the mortal vision.
145. This Must Be Realized

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 9:48, 2124 views.

This Must Be RealizedIn this Discourse (which took place on November 11, 2005 at The Mountain Of Attention), Avatar Adi Da answers a devotee's question about the human condition. He criticizes reductive viewpoints (scientific, religious, etc.) that try to account for a multi-level phenomenon (such as evolution) in terms of just one level (the gross level of bodies), ignoring other levels that participate in the phenomenon (the impact of subtle or "mind" level influences on evolution, the impact of molecular level influences on evolution, etc.). He also criticizes the presumption that everything can be explained, and points out that the multi-level phenomenon that is life and experience is (when fully examined) so complex that it is "irreducible", beyond comprehension. Beyond all the apparent (and incomprehensible) arising that is conditional existence is the indivisible Conscious Light in which all is arising. To Realize Conscious Light is to be liberated from all need for explanations. As Adi Da puts it: "When It is Realized, it becomes entirely clear what everything is and how it is happening."

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 5:27, 534 views.

The Bright Reality Beyond the God IdeaIn this excerpt from an Avataric Discourse, Adi Da gives a Radical and profound description of the true nature of the Divine Reality, stating that the Divine is the substance of all that arises, not the "cause" of anything, Adi Da goes on to describe how it is our own separation from that which is the very Divine, that causes the assumption of separation (and all our suffering).

This talk excerpt is followed by a clip of Darshan of Adi Da (at 4:27).

160. You Do Not Think

A video clip from AdiDaVideos in our Audio/Video Library — length: 6:53, 797 views.

You Do Not ThinkThis is an excerpt from the DVD, Locate What Is Real, an Avataric Discourse given by Adi Da on October 10, 2004.

In this excerpt, Adi Da explains how all the beings and things we tend to presume have an independent existence are in fact only apparitions arising in a single, universal Consciousness and are modifications of a single, underlying Divine Reality. Adi Da notes that the presumption that we are generating our actual thinking process is a part of this apparition. He says that even thoughts themselves are only an activity arising in Consciousness, and, if we truly examined this activity, we would notice that we are not generating the thinking process.

On the full DVD:
* Adi Da describes how Reality is the true “first experience” for everyone — more fundamental to existence than identification with the apparently “born” being.
* He speaks about how music and other arts can function as extensions of Spirituality.
* He talks about Ramana Maharshi and the sixth stage orientation, in contrast to His seventh stage Reality-Way.
* He addresses a devotee’s experience of emotional trauma, and how such events can affect one’s life.
* He describes His own Submission, in His early life, to the process of Christian mystical experience.
161. Death Is Not the End of Anything

A video clip from CDBaby in our Audio/Video Library — length: 9:14, 656 views.

Death Is Not the End of AnythingThis is an excerpt from Adi Da's talk, "Death Is Not The End Of Anything", on January 14, 1995 at Adi Da Samrasjashram. This talk appears as a chapter in Adi Da's book, Easy Death.

Adi Da: "You cannot get in touch with Reality Itself (or Truth Itself) without dying — in the sense of relinquishing the egoic self. Most people think they will do that at the end of the physical lifetime. They do not deal with Reality (or Truth) in life, yet they imagine they will deal with It at death. They will not — if they have not dealt with It while alive. They will not want Reality (or Truth) in death any more than they wanted it while they lived. To Realize Reality Itself, 'you', the ego, must die — because 'you' is a knot, a gesture, an act of separating from Reality. What is called 'you' is an action of dissociation from Reality. I call it 'the ego', 'the self-contraction'. It avoids Reality."

This excerpt is track 7 of the CD, Death and the Purpose of Existence, a collection of talks and recitations that exemplify Avatar Adi Da's essential Wisdom-Teaching on death and dying.

The album is available through iTunes, Microsoft, and The Dawn Horse Press.

Introduction To The Zero Point Retreat[Note: We reposted this video from Vimeo. Not everyone will be able to play this video on this web page, but you can always watch it on Vimeo.]

In this video, longtime devotee and Adidam educator, Carolyn Lee, introduces "The Zero Point", a retreat taking place at the European Danda, April 28 - 30, 2017.

Read or watch the daily news these days and you will find it filled with identity politics and the fear and anxiety that such politics engenders. Identity politics is a major threat to the world. In this retreat, we explore the root of identity politics: the presumption of difference and separateness. We also study and consider Adi Da's Wisdom on understanding, un-learning, and transcending the illusion of separateness and the act of separation, and Realizing Prior Unity, Non-Separateness, and unlimited relatedness to everything and everyone.

The "Zero Point" is the place where we can drop all the limited and superficial points of view, and find the profound depth of Reality Itself. This has the potential for initiating a Reality-informed and Reality-transformed personal process and a collective activism in the contemporary world.

For more information about the retreat, write info@adidam.org.

The Vision of LoveOn his new downloadable album, At the Feet of the Spiritual Master, devotee Gerald Sheinfeld tells leelas — true stories of his life of over 45 years with Avatar Adi Da Samraj. These stories begin before the first ashram opened in 1972. They provide details of how Avatar Adi Da awakened ordinary people into devotees of Real God. These stories are based on the awakened recognition of the prior Unity of Divine Reality. They are full of lessons of self-understanding and brightening heart-joy in finding the truth about God, the truth about life and death. The truth of prior Happiness which is the true Condition of all, prior to the ego-I act of separation.

Gerald has been a devotee of Adi Da since the beginning of Adi Da's work with devotees. He accompanied Adi Da on His 1974 trip to India, and has participated in countless sacred occasions and events in the company of Adi Da in the intervening years — so he has many stories to tell!

Some of those stories are on this downloadable album. This audio excerpt is track 8, "The Vision Of Love", on Gerald's downloadable album.

From our section, FAQs about Adi Da and Adidam

Question: What about the dissident ex-devotees who express negative feelings about Adi Da and Adidam on the Web?

Answer: A recent independent study shows that most ex-devotees are NOT negatively disposed toward Adi Da and Adidam — quite the contrary! The vast majority of former devotees have positive feelings about Adi Da and the time they spent in Adidam.

Nancy C.: "I left Adi Da Samraj because the revelation of Narcissus was unbearable to me. . . You can say anything you want about this incredible being, Adi Da Samraj, but in my reality, He was the only one who showed me true love, who was willing to insult me to the ultimate degree to help me to see my real condition. 177. Incorruptibility

From our section, FAQs about Adi Da and Adidam

Question: Didn't Adi Da state that His body was incorruptible — or at least that it would be suitable for display (if it did not resurrect) for some years to come? My understanding is that it was buried on the third day after death, due to its poor condition.

Brief Answer: No, Adi Da never said His body would be incorruptible after death, although He did mention the possibility that His lifetime could end with His body disappearing in Light. He also considered a variety of alternatives for exactly what to do with His body, to make it as potent a vehicle as possible for Spiritual Transmission to the world in general (and visiting devotees, in particular), and decided in favor of an approach along the lines of a traditional Mahasamadhi site. The "Brightness" is the Mahasamadhi site that was built (and in which Adi Da's body is buried) to His precise instructions.

Surrender Without LimitationIn this beautiful and intimate Discourse given on December 30, 1983 at Adi Da Samrajashram, Avatar Adi Da speaks with a man who suffers from claustrophobia. Avatar Adi Da points to the self-generated cause of such terrifying experiences, describing them as symptoms of feeling-contraction from the Field of Divine Existence. He calls this man—and all who are sensitive to suffering and anxiety—to find the Bliss of Divine Existence in His Company, and to intensively practice feeling beyond all emotional limits on living in That Bliss.

The Sanctuary Kitchen: Beet SaladIn keeping with Adi Da's recommendation that devotees eat a maximally raw diet [see Adi Da's Green Gorilla], Douglas Short, the head chef at First People (The Mountain Of Attention Sanctuary kitchen), instructs us on how to make a beet salad.

Useful kitchen accessories:
* a mandoline slicer
* food dehydrator [Douglas suggests using one not for making the beet salad, but for making beet chips]

192. The Offering of Perfect Happiness

From our Introduction section

All the great Spiritual Masters have been not only teachers, but Transmission Masters: they literally transmit their Spiritual Realization to their devotees, communicating a state that is happier than the usual worldly destiny. The greatest of all Spiritual Masters are the Divine Incarnations, who transmit the greatest Realization of all — the Divine State of Perfect and Eternal Happiness. In this article, we make the case that Avatar Adi Da Samraj is just such a rare Divine Incarnation.

194. You Don't Love Me

A video clip from Wisdom Tools for Humanity in our Audio/Video Library — length: 8:47, 542 views.

You Don't Love MeAn audio excerpt from Adi Da Samraj's early talk, "Renouncing the Search for the Edible Deity", accompanied by more recent photos of Adi Da.

Adi Da: "When we look out into the universe we feel insulted, rejected, unloved. And so we make philosophy out of our apparent independence. Fundamentally, it is not our experiences in particular relationships that tell us we are not loved. Some people do not love us, surely, but nevertheless we are simply, always, and already philosophically disposed to believe that we are not loved. It is our interpretation of existence, not on the basis of any relational experience we have had with other human beings, but on the basis of our apparent independence itself. Our sense of independent bodily existence means separation to us, whereas, you see, it is really only the sense of independent bodily existence. When you become strong — if you ever can become truly strong — autonomous, able to take a deep breath, then you stop interpreting the universe as a form of rejection, as a great parent from whose company you have been expelled, under whose domination you live, who has rejected you and does not love you. Everyone is simply born into the conventional condition of independence and everyone interprets that condition as rejection, as 'you don't love me.' "

"Renouncing the Search for the Edible Deity" is available as a CD here. A transcript is also available online and as a chapter in the book, The Yoga Of Right Diet.

199. Exegesis as Means for Right Interpretation of Adi Da's Communications Over Time

From our section, FAQs about Adi Da and Adidam

Context is everything when it comes to understanding what someone means. This may be even more true than usual when the communications are of a spiritual nature. From the beginning of Adi Da's Work with devotees and the world to the end of His human lifetime, the nature of His work with devotees — and therefore, the context of His talks and writings — was constantly shifting and evolving. Without the kind of framework we are presenting here (that pins down the specific context for a talk or essay), it is all too easy to mis-interpret Adi Da's communications.
