Crazy Wisdom > The Call To Be Love > Part 7: Conclusion

7. Conclusion

This is Part 7 of Michael Costabile's seven-part article, The Call To Be Love: (And To Live As Love In All Relations).

After years of firsthand experience in Adi Da’s Company, I am convinced that He remains (as always) singularly devoted to the Liberation of each and every devotee and to the Transmission of His Divine Heart-Blessing to all. But Adi Da’s Work with every individual has necessarily involved a calculated risk, the outcome of which was never certain. The real requirements for ego-transcendence are not transferable; it is for each individual to freely accept and fulfill them — or not. This is where all the controversy has been in relation to Adi Da, who has remained unconventional from the very beginning of His Teaching-Work in 1972. The wisdom-fruits of His Self-Submission remain, even while Adi Da retires, as He says,

. . . into My Own (Always Prior, Native, egoless, Perfect, and Supremely Free) Disposition — without My originally Self-Presumed Teaching Obligations, and without My active First Impulse to Be Self-Revealed by Means of Self-Submission.”

“Walk-About To Me”, from My Final Work Of Divine Indifference, p. 63

Therefore, He Bequeaths His Wisdom-Revelations “to all who would find Heart-Breaking Freedom”:

I Am the One Who has Completed the Great “Consideration” of emotional-sexual life — and I Did So for the Sake of every one. I Am the One Who has made it possible for human beings to comprehend the emotional-sexual dimension of existence, and to completely transcend egoic reactivity, and to truly grow beyond the ordinary emotional-sexual limitations that the “worldly” mind represents, and (by all of this) to have an altogether — and in reality — sane life.

“My Word To All Who Would Find Heart-Breaking Freedom”
from The Complete Yoga Of Human Emotional-Sexual Life, p. 27 [1]

If Adi Da’s Methods of Teaching were paradoxical, so too are the complex ego-patterns of every individual — the hidden well of desires, seeking, conflict, and confusion that surface in the midst of a life otherwise moved to happiness, love, and freedom. It is for devotees of Adi Da Samraj to champion the “mutual consent” between disciple and Master by which Adi Da has always presumed the right to Teach as He deemed fit in order to “Purify and (soon) Illuminate the mortal human heart”.

Adi Da’s “reality consideration” with devotees was not done in the secular setting of the common world, but in the sacred domain — the necessarily intimate setting of esoteric spiritual instruction. And it was done with fully willing participants. It is a testimony to Adi Da's unassailable integrity that He persisted for so many years, knowing full well that His Teaching-Submission remained unacceptable to the common world and was vulnerable to every kind of moralistic criticism, innuendo, and self-righteous condemnation. This is all the more remarkable in light of the fact that, in the end, Adi Da entirely relinquished His Self-Submission Work, embracing only His “Revelation-Demonstration” of Sapta Na Sannyas as the “Acausal Means” by which Divine Liberation is “enabled” in human beings.

Lastly, I realize without any apologies that my comments here amount to a wholesale advocacy of Adi Da and the virtuous history of His Teaching-Work. But this is not the mere voicing of some “party-line” sentiment. I have written out of my own free impulse, having been personally tested and disciplined by Adi Da well beyond my own comfort zones and egoic limitations. His ultimate conclusions about the years of His Teaching-Submission, notwithstanding, I treasure and uphold all the unsettling paradoxes of His Work; I have repeatedly witnessed His benign and transformative influence in my own life and in the lives of others, and I am amazed and grateful for all of it.

But there is something more: Adi Da’s Purity, His Avataric, ego-less State of Being, is not, and will never be, an arguable point. The intuitive heart-recognition of Him as the Incarnation of Reality and Truth is either clear and obvious to one’s own feeling heart, or it is not. Either one recognizes Adi Da in His Divinely Enlightened State of Being, or one does not.[2] And all who confront Adi Da, His Teaching, and the sacred history of His Work, are free to contemplate the mysteries and paradoxes of all He has said and done — and of all that He Is — for themselves.

In the end each individual is invited to consider Adi Da’s Teaching, His Work of Self-Submission, and His Divine Self-Revelation of Reality and Truth to all, and, if so moved to freely (and responsively) take up the Reality-Way of Adidam in His Company. Only in the actual practice of this Way — in direct devotional relationship to Adi Da Samraj — does one discover firsthand, and to one’s fullest satisfaction, the Truth and Purity of His Heart-Revelation to all.
