Big Philosophy for Little Kidsvideo

speakers: Frank Marrero, Layman Pascal
length: 60:55
date added: October 2, 2021
language: English

For the fifteenth episode of the Integral Stage Authors Series, Layman Pascal sits down with author and Adi Da devotee, Frank Marrero, to talk about, not a book this time, but an affective writing curriculum that he developed for children. Drawing particularly on Vedic and Greek sources, but also contemporary knowledge, the curriculum introduces students to the major stages of development they can expect to pass through on the way to becoming healthy, mature, wise, affectively fluent individuals and moral agents. In the discussion that follows, Frank guides Layman through lucid, engaging descriptions each of the stages, and offers some reflections on the integration and "clean up" work adults can do if they have not successfully passed through them all.

Frank Marrero is an educator, a disciple of Adi Da, and the curator of the Beezone website. As he says about himself, "I fell 4 meters (head-first) into concrete at age 6, inflicting me with life-long dysgraphia, or the crippling of handwriting. Sixty-one more times around the sun, I am the unlikely author of 9 books (thanks to computers!). As you may notice, my non-fiction ranges from biographies to fasting to education to spirituality. Writing is such a joy for me, I pray some of it leaks through!"

[Contains Italian subtitles. If the CC icon ("Subtitles/closed captions") has a red line under it, the subtitles should appear. If you don't see them, just press the CC icon to turn them on.]

In this video clip from the 1988 talk, "What Is Your Intention?", Adi Da criticizes the "do-it-yourself" approach to spirituality that is popular in the world today, and speaks about why a teacher is necessary.

Adi Da reminds us that, historically, all the world's spiritual traditions have taught that Spiritual Realization requires the help of a Spiritual Realizer. This is actually built into the laws of how Spiritual Realization works, and can't be changed just because times and cultures change, just because we don't happen to like the way the laws work or what they require of us, etc. For this reason, Adi Da makes the point that, nowadays, our resistence to authority, and addiction to "do it yourself" approaches, represent unfortunate hindrances to our own Spiritual growth: if we simply go with the flow and let these culturally instilled programs dominate our life choices, they will keep us from Realizing our greatest destiny.

This is an excerpt from the DVD, Locate What Is Real, an Avataric Discourse given by Adi Da on October 10, 2004.

In this excerpt, Adi Da explains how all the beings and things we tend to presume have an independent existence are in fact only apparitions arising in a single, universal Consciousness and are modifications of a single, underlying Divine Reality. Adi Da notes that the presumption that we are generating our actual thinking process is a part of this apparition. He says that even thoughts themselves are only an activity arising in Consciousness, and, if we truly examined this activity, we would notice that we are not generating the thinking process.

On the full DVD:
* Adi Da describes how Reality is the true “first experience” for everyone — more fundamental to existence than identification with the apparently “born” being.
* He speaks about how music and other arts can function as extensions of Spirituality.
* He talks about Ramana Maharshi and the sixth stage orientation, in contrast to His seventh stage Reality-Way.
* He addresses a devotee’s experience of emotional trauma, and how such events can affect one’s life.
* He describes His own Submission, in His early life, to the process of Christian mystical experience.

From July, 2015 through May, 2016, longtime devotee Gerald Sheinfeld embarked on a worldwide "Leela Tour" spanning 50 locations in 10 countries. (The tour stops are listed below.) The tour was in anticipation of the release of Gerald's forthcoming book, At The Feet of the Spiritual Master: Stories from My Life with Avatar Adi Da Samraj.

In April, 2016 (close to the end of his tour), Gerald hosted several events at The Mountain Of Attention. This hour-long audio clip contains excerpts from those events — so if you were unable to attend any of Gerald's events. . . here is a taste!

Gerald has been a devotee of Adi Da since the beginning of Adi Da's work with devotees. He accompanied Adi Da on His 1973 trip to India, and has participated in countless sacred occasions and events in the company of Adi Da in the intervening years — so he has many stories to tell.

Where is Heaven?video

A video of the talk, "Where is Heaven?", by devotee, professor, and Zen Abbot Michael LaTorra - one of 14 talks by speakers of different religious faiths at the Religion and Transhumanism Conference in Oakland, California, on May 10, 2014. This conference was co-sponsored by the Brighter Brains Institute and the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies, and videoed by the Mormon Transhumanist Association.

Transhumanism is a movement whose goal is to fundamentally transform the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities and overcome present liabilities, including brief lifespan and limits on intelligence (e.g., through integration with artificial intelligence aids or networks).

What transhumanism and religion share is the question: what is the greatest potential (or destiny) for human beings, and how can it be realized (technologically, spiritually, etc.)?

"Heaven" is a popular subject these days - The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Heaven is for Real, and Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife are all huge, recent bestsellers. Because "heaven" is used in many familiar religions to signify the ultimate human destiny, Mike uses it as his jumping off point for this talk (which introduces the Buddhist view and the Adidam view). He distinguishes different kinds of "heavens", introducing Adi Da's "seven stages of life" framework, the Cosmic Mandala (as a "map" that helps answer the talk's title question), and other esoteric concepts helpful in understanding our ultimate potential. He draws on stories about visiting other realms, from devotees Anne Rogers and Connie Mantas and from Adi Da Himself.

[For a related exploration of these themes of human potential, technology, and spirituality, read our article, We Are Consciousness Itself.]

An excerpt from "Money, Food, and Sex", a humorous and penetrating Discourse from the very earliest years of Avatar Adi Da’s Teaching-Work. Adi Da criticizes the typical conception of Spirituality as having nothing to do with the realities of day-to-day life and says that taking responsibility for money, food, and sex creates the foundation practice of genuine spiritual practice.

From the CD, Money, Food, and Sex / Guru As Prophet. This talk is also published in the book, My "Bright" Word. A course, My "Bright" Word, is also available from The Laughing Man Institute.
