The September 7 Event:
The Sovereign-Avataric Holy Day of
Completed Teaching-Submission

Much of this article was adapted from Chapter 13 of Carolyn Lee, Ph.D., Adi Da: The Promised God-Man Is Here.

On August 5, 1994, Adi Da was moved to leave the island of Naitauba and begin a period of wandering in Fiji. Ruchiradama Nadikanta, who was part of the small group of devotees accompanying Adi Da, describes the time:

Ruchiradama NadikantaI have always noticed that, in each and all of Beloved Adi Da's Acts. . . He is always only Giving His extraordinary Blessing. This fact was completely obvious during this Yajna. The trip was His constant Divine Play. There were only two things going on: On the one hand, there was His daily Fierce Calling, to His devotees everywhere, to resort to Him absolutely, rather than resorting to ourselves and to our ordinary searches and distractions. On the other hand, there were continual forays into the land and culture of Fiji, through visits to parks, gardens, and other scenic places, and countless small shops full of Fijian handicrafts and Indian religious images and traditional Indian clothing. On these trips, Beloved Adi Da constantly Gave the Fijian and Indian cultures His Blessing-Regard.

In the midst of all of this, Beloved Adi Da was also doing intensive Work on the manuscripts of many of His "Source-Texts". It was this Work that provided the first signs of the transformation that this time would bring. He Worked on His Manuscripts daily and for many hours at a time.

Beloved Adi Da also once again adopted the traditional sannyasin color of orange, as He had in 1986 [shortly after the initiation of His Divine "Self"-Emergence, on January 11, 1986]. The first day He went dressed in orange into the public, it was to Nadi, one of Fiji's principal cities. There, Beloved Adi Da moved into the heart of Indian culture in Fiji, visiting one tiny Indian shop after another.

It was astonishing to me to walk with Beloved Adi Da, clad in sannyasin orange, in the streets and shops of Nadi. I had travelled with Him in the United States and Europe during the 1986 Yajna, where there had been so little understanding of His renunciate sign — and even a biased reaction to this sign of renunciation. In Nadi and in Suva, by contrast, the Hindus especially understood His Sign. When we entered a shop, everyone would quietly and respectfully gaze at Beloved Adi Da and He would just stand or sit there and Grant His Darshan to everyone who gave Him their attention.

In the shops, He looked at all the images associated with Indian Spirituality — even all the popular "street" images of the various Hindu deities. I felt Avatar Adi Da Granting His Blessing to the entire tradition of Indian Spirituality by this means. He likewise inspected all the mechandise in the Fijian shops, Granting His Blessing to the traditional Fijian culture by so doing.

On September 7, 1994, Fiji time (September 6, 1994, Western hemisphere time), at His temporary residence in Pacific Harbour, on the Fijian island of Viti Levu, Adi Da stayed secluded in His room, where He had recently spent many hours writing. Ruchiradama Nadikanta attended Him.

The house was totally still. At one point, Beloved Adi Da called me into the room. The curtains were drawn, and the room was dim and unlit. He was not doing any of the Work on His Manuscripts that I had become accustomed to His doing each day in recent weeks. He was simply sitting in the large upholstered chair we had placed in the room for His use. Beloved Adi Da's Force was so focused and concentrated in the room that the room itself felt almost unapproachable to me. I felt as though I was being pushed out, as when the heat from a fire blasts you backwards out of a blazing space. I served Him simply and left the room.

When Ruchiradama Nadikanta entered again in the evening, answering His call, the same overwhelming Transmission-Force was Radiating from Him. Avatar Adi Da was seated at His desk with the lights turned on. She sat at His Feet. He did not look at her at first. But then, after a few moments, He slowly turned His head.

The face of Beloved Adi Da Samraj was so full of Passion and the Sign of Perfect Love for all beings that I was overwhelmed by the vision of His Sacrificial Ordeal in His Work with His devotees. I was reminded of that same heartbreaking Love for the billions of humanity that had overwhelmed Beloved Adi Da more than eight years before, when His Divine Self-"Emergence" was initiated on January 11, 1986. I felt certain that some extraordinary Process was taking place in Him.

Ruchiradama Nadikanta

Avatar Adi Da later confirmed that this was true. September 7, 1994, He said, had marked the most important transition in His Life since January 11, 1986 — the Yogic Establishment of His Divine Self-"Emergence". It was the Completing, He said, of His "Effort" to Descend (or "Emerge") in the cosmic Domain, an "Effort" that had been going on since His birth. Although January 11, 1986, was the most significant moment in that Process, the moment when His Divine Being had combined with His human body most perfectly, He acknowledged that He felt a further resolution had occurred. His Body was even more "refined" by the potency of His Divine Spiritual Presence, and He did not feel any remaining movement to Submit to His devotees in order to serve them.

On September 12, Avatar Adi Da Samraj returned to Adi Da Samrajashram as swiftly as He had left it on August 5, and, some days later, He further described the significance of September 7:

In 1986, I Instructed My devotees that they had to change their way of relating to Me, and the process of that change has characterized the struggle of the last nearly nine years. At the time, I accepted a certain struggle, even though it was almost unbearable. I had to endure it, and I Communicated to My devotees in the midst of it. That was the initial process of My Divine "Self"-Emergence.

In early September of this year, and just as suddenly as the signs appeared in January 1986, the signs in My Body indicated a similar dramatic change.

This Body is in an extremely refined state. My devotees should approach Me only to conduct Me Spiritually, not to engage in any conventional form of relating to Me. I must put this Body in a different situation now. It was refined by My Divine "Self"-Emergence. It must not be put in a position of conventional or social relatedness any longer, or I will lose this Vehicle. You will lose It. You cannot even imagine what has been required to prepare this Vehicle and provide this Incarnation.

September 21 and 23, 1994

On October 11, one month after the September 7 event, Adi Da would hear and see the name, "Adi Da", His Principal Divine Name.

The years that unfolded after September 7, 1994, showed more of the meaning of that Event as a true Completion of Avatar Adi Da's fundamental Work to Teach and Reveal the secrets of His Incarnation. The focus of those years became His Writing. Even while Adi Da continued to gather with devotees — as He did regularly for more than six months in 1995, and frequently thereafter — He was more and more concentrated in Completing His esoteric Instruction and His Divine Confessions about Himself for the sake of His Source-Literature and all the future generations of His devotees, beyond His human lifetime.

Adi Da would also later make the startling Revelation that the Event on September 7, 1994 fully and finally established His Eternal Spiritual Presence in all the conditional realms.
