6. The Paradoxical Conclusion
Of Adi Da's "Self-Submission" Work

This is Part 6 of Michael Costabile's seven-part article, The Call To Be Love: (And To Live As Love In All Relations).

Adi Da has only recently revealed His final conclusions about His years of Teaching-Submission in general and about emotion and sexuality in particular. In both instances, His conclusions are surprising and paradoxical. Those relative to sexuality run contrary to the “spiritual” mind of popular “new-age” culture. More significantly, they also run counter to various tantric traditions and practices aimed at the yogic transformation of sexual energy into spiritual energy.

Sexuality, Adi Da affirms conclusively, “is not causative” relative to the real spiritual process. Sex cannot cause or stimulate spiritual awakening. You cannot start with sex and end up with Enlightenment. It does not work that way. Spiritual Awakening requires an entirely different exercise of energy and attention than does sexuality — even in its most yogically attuned and disciplined form:

The illusion that sexuality can “cause” Spiritual growth stems from the fundamental illusion that Spiritual practice is a process that starts “below”, and moves from there to Above. That illusion is an unwitting validation of egoity — a declaration that, in effect, the ego must “propel” itself upward, to the Divine (thus, “taking Heaven by storm”). “Below” is not (and never can be) “causative” relative to What Is Above. Rather, What Is Above Must Purify and Transform and (Most Ultimately) En-light-en what is “below”.

“My Word To All Who Would Find Heart-Breaking Freedom”
from The Complete Yoga Of Human Emotional-Sexual Life, p. 31 [2]

At most, yogically responsible sex can be made compatible with the spiritual process — but even then, only to a point. The ultimate process of Transcendental Spiritual Realization requires the direct Transmission of a Realizer, as well as the transcendence of the body-mind so profoundly and comprehensively that sex is necessarily (and freely, or motivelessly) abandoned as the energy and attention of the being are given over entirely to the Transcendental Spiritual Ecstasy of Divine Communion.

Speaking of the relationship between personal sexual energy and the traditionally acknowledged Kundalini Shakti in particular, Adi Da writes:

The actual Spiritual ascent of the true Kundalini Shakti (otherwise activated) cannot be achieved either during or as a direct or thus-caused result of any Yogic sexual (or, otherwise, active physical) practice — because the actual Spiritual ascent of the true Kundalini Shakti . . . requires deep relinquishment ( or the effective transcending) of the body-mind. And, in any case, what fullest Spiritual ascent of the Kundalini Shakti really requires is true Devotional and Spiritual Communion in ascent. . . .

The true Kundalini Shakti is all-pervading, and not merely personal and internal. And, therefore, the true Kundalini Shakti is awakened in the personal (and internal) psycho-physical context only by virtue of Grace-Given participation in the all-pervading field of cosmically-manifested Spiritual Energy. Therefore, the true Kundalini Shakti can be awakened only by Divine Spiritual Grace, Transmitted directly by a Spiritual Adept of one or another degree . . .

from the essay, “The True Kundalini Shakti Can Be Awakened Only by the Spiritual Grace of a True Adept, and It Cannot Be Awakened by Any Kind of Yogic Sexual Practice” in The Basket Of Tolerance

Adi Da has expressed this understanding many times during His considerations with devotees about the yogic sexual process and its relationship to spiritual life, practice, and realization. To the most serious practitioners, this is a clarifying resolution to an ordeal of experimentation that has covered the gamut of emotional-sexual possibilities in relation to ordinary human love, yogic self-discipline, spiritual awakening, and Divine Self-Realization.

Regarding His Self-Submission Teaching-Work altogether, Adi Da reveals His paradoxical conclusions in the greater context of what He Calls the “‘world’-mummery of human egoity”. With heartbreaking candor, He writes:

In My Years of Submission-Work, I Reflected human individuals to themselves and Worked to Awaken them. However, that Submission-to-Reflect was taken to be a sign of Who I Am — rather than being rightly understood as a sign of the Way That I was Teaching. From the beginning of My Divine Avataric Work with My devotees, My Intention was that My Work of Self-Submission would be a temporary “Method” — until Real and True Awakening was evident in My devotees.

It has now been conclusively demonstrated to Me that My “Method” of Self-Submission did not work, and cannot work, and would not ever work. . . .

And why is this?

In all of the Years of My Divine Avataric Self-Submission-Work, I related to the gathering of My devotees as if all of My devotees had come to me for Divine Self-Realization. However, in those years of Self-Submission, it became (more and more) evident that, in actuality, virtually no one had truly come to Me for Divine Self-Realization. People remained bound in their own “self”-imagery and conventional-mindedness. People remained bound to the messages of the “world”-mummery that congratulate the ego for being itself, and offer it “consumer” fulfillment of itself.

from My Final Work Of Divine Indifference, pp. 52 and 55

Moreover, He writes (of humankind in general):

The entire human “world” is a mummery of people simply being egos. Every one wants to be addressed, seen, and known on the basis of his or her bodily and mental ego-identity. Every one wants to be given whatever is needed in order to feel good about being a body-mind-ego. Every one wants to be relieved — to the maximum, and in the moment — of the sensations of fear and anxiety. Thus, the entire human “world” insists on being addressed as a colossal “cult” of egos.

The Reality-Way of Adidam is not based on addressing people as egos. . . . Indeed, the Reality-Way of Adidam is precisely the opposite of that.

“Walk-About To Me”

Adi Da’s Work “to Reflect humankind back to itself” necessarily failed, because, it was conclusively proven by Adi Da that it does not work to address people as egos — as presumed separate beings, who are identified with a body-mind and seeking its fulfillment by any means, high or low.[1] Such reflective-address, as it turns out, only serves to reinforce egoity:

When I “Stirred the pond” while “Narcissus” stared into it, “Narcissus” did not Wake Up. No — “Narcissus” simply took My “Stirring” as glamorization of “self”-image. I simply became part of the “self”-image with which “Narcissus” was infatuated. In that manner, I was used by people as a means to support egoity. And to the degree I Made it Obvious that I did not Intend to Offer any such support of egoity, I was punished and ignored by people, and made to wait. . . .

The fact that My “Method” of Self-Submission did not work is a profound matter, with greatest implications — not only in terms of My Own Divine Avataric Work, but for humankind altogether. . . . The culture of humankind — as it is — is absolutely false. . . . Human culture is based on a false view of Reality Itself, of the human being, and of the apparent universe. Therefore, over the many years of My Divine Avataric Self-Submission, the evidence that My Effort of Self-Submission was not going to work (and could not work) steadily grew more and more conclusive. As that conclusion became more and more fully accepted by Me, I began to Work in a different manner.

“Walk-About To Me”

Stated simply, that shift was from Adi Da’s Work of Self-Submission to that of His Divine Self-Revelation. Only His Divine Self-Revelation, and not any address to the ego in its presumed separateness, enables the process of Transcendental Spiritual Realization.

Now My “Method” Is Only Self-Revelation. My “Method” is no longer Self-Submission. Divine Avataric Self-Revelation-Only Is the “Method” That has Come About through a Lifetime of Divine Avataric Self-Submission — in the course of which the fruitlessness of My Self-Submission was conclusively proven.

Divine Self-Revelation of My Own Person and Self-State — Which Is Direct Self-Revelation of the Self-State of Reality Itself — Is the Only Means That Is (and can Be) Effective. The “Method” of Direct Self-Revelation-Only is not the “Method” Demonstrated by Me during My Years of Self-Submission. To rightly understand My Divine Avataric Life and Work, it is essential to understand This Change in My Own Approach and My Own Disposition.

Why then did He pursue His Work of Self-Submission with such commitment and intensity for so long a time? Of this He writes:

It was absolutely Necessary that I Do everything, in order to See if My Blessing and Liberation of beings were possible by Means of My Self-Submission. I have Demonstrated, with Absolute Conclusiveness, that Such is not possible. Therefore, there is no purpose in any continuation of My Self-Submission. . . . My Impulse to continue Working in the Manner of Self-Submission utterly Vanished — most conclusively, on July 10, 2007. The fruitlessness of My Self-Submission became so overwhelmingly obvious that That Effort entirely Fell Away.

From that moment, Adi Da fully embraced “Sapta Na Sannyas” — a radically renunciate disposition that Stands entirely apart from any “Self-Submission” to devotees or the world and which expresses only His Free Blessing-Disposition toward all.

[Now] I Am a Sapta Na Sannyasin, Utterly Free. I Did My Submission-Work — and This Is How I now Am — As I Am [and the] Blessing [of all and All] Is simply My Nature, My State, My Intrinsic Condition of Self-Radiance.

This profundity being so, however, the wisdom-revelations of Adi Da’s Submission Years remain among His most enduring Gifts to the world. His considerations, insights, instructions, and revelations about ordinary life (including emotional-sexual self-understanding) extend to humankind as a whole, and are immediately relevant and applicable to all — now and in perpetuity. There is a way to live in the fullness of our common humanity — profoundly given over to love and self-yielding in relation to the Divine Reality and to all others. How to do so with a truly open and wounded heart is a fundamental wisdom-lesson conveyed in all the Teaching-Work done by Adi Da during the entire epoch of His Self-Submission.
