2. Recognition:
The Prerequisite for Taking up the Way of Adidam

This is Part 2 of Chris Tong's five-part article, The Significance of Recognition in the Way of Adidam.

Adi Da Samraj

Recognition of Me is all.
Recognition of Me is Liberation.
Recognition of Me demonstrates all of devotion, renunciation, and Realization.
Devotional recognition of Me Is the Way of Me.

Part 24, The Aletheon

If one reads Adi Da's final text, The Aletheon, one will see everywhere throughout it that recognition of Him as the Divine Person is the very basis for the Way of Adidam, and hence the essential "entrance requirement" for becoming His devotee.

. . . If I am devotionally recognized, the "Radical" Reality-Way of Adidam Ruchiradam Is Revealed. Indeed, the "Radical" Reality-Way of Adidam Ruchiradam Is Found only if I am devotionally recognized — because Adidam Ruchiradam Is participation in Me. Adidam Ruchiradam Is the Process That Spontaneously Unfolds if I am devotionally recognized. Adidam Ruchiradam is not a practice that is engaged merely because someone is moved by Me (or relates to Me) as an "objective other", or as a Teacher-Master in some not-yet-most-profoundly recognized sense. . . .

If I am not devotionally recognized, there is an enormity of "world" and ego-"self" to be figured out, and there are always a lot of things yet to seek and do. When I am devotionally recognized, there is not anything to do anymore, because there is no "problem", and (therefore) no basis for seeking. None whatsoever. . . .

Adidam Ruchiradam begins only when I am straightforwardly devotionally recognized in exactly these terms. . . .Whole bodily devotional recognition of Me Is the "Root" of Adidam Ruchiradam.

The entire devotional process in My Divine Avataric Company . . . is the unfolding magnification of "Root"-Coincidence with Me. If that "Root"-Coincidence is not (really, truly, and moment to moment) the case, it does not make any difference how "correct" My devotee is seeming to be, or how My devotee otherwise appears to be conforming to "correct" behavioral details of the practice I Reveal and Give. None of that "correctness" is authentic without That "Root"-Coincidence. Without That "Root"-Coincidence, there is nothing but mere behavior, mummery, ego-enactment — fruitless and meaningless nonsense.

Therefore, the only right and true Reality-practice of the only-by-Me Revealed and Given Reality-Way of Adidam is "radical" (or always "at-the-root") whole bodily-recognition-responsive devotional Communion with Me — As I Am.

Those who recognize Me are transformed by knowing Me, utterly transformed. Their faculties are turned to Me by My Force of Person. It's not that you have a prescription to turn the faculties to Me. This is what devotion is. It is the whole bodily response to Me. That means the faculties turn to Me.

This must be the case, first of all, for any further Instruction to be given. I simply point out that's it. That's what devotion is. The Way is built upon that. And then I elaborate all the various Instructions or matters of address that I must put to devotees. And that's the Way. . . . It immediately sets Me apart and turns the devotee to Me as My servant forever.

Anyone without that evidence is not My devotee, is at most some kind of nominal member of the institutional gathering.

Because recognition is the essential "entrance requirement" for taking up the Way of Adidam, the Eternal Vow that is taken when one becomes a devotee explicitly refers to one's recognition of Adi Da:

Beloved Bhagavan Adi Da Samraj, I recognize and acknowledge Your Divine Person to Be the Eternal Source of Perfect Divine Grace, the Divine True Heart of all conditionally manifested beings, the Very Divine Person Who Avatarically Self-Manifested in bodily (human) Form for the Sake of the Divine Liberation of all-and-All. Thus, I recognize and acknowledge Your Divine Person to Be my Eternal Divine Avataric Master.

One cannot (and should not) take this vow until one has recognized Adi Da as the Divine Person. It is not something we do on the basis of belief, only on the basis of Revelation. Just so, the Way of Adidam is not something we practice on the basis of belief, only on the basis of Revelation.

You could correctly, so to speak, correctly follow My Instructions and still not be practicing this Way because on that basis, invariably you will have abandoned My fundamental instructions which have to do with the recognition-response to Me, the devotional turning to Me.

If you feel Me, you can practice turning (whole bodily) to Me — because it is your heart-response to do so. That is the Way of Adidam. If you do not heart-recognize Me, you will not heart-respond to Me. In that case, you cannot (and will not) turn to Me. You may do some kind of strategic exercise that you think is turning to Me, but no such exercise has anything to do with Realizing Me, with entering into the (Spherical, Transcendental, and Self-Evidently Divine) Sphere of My Acausal Divine Person and State.

Avatar Adi Da Samraj, Radical Transcendentalism

What should we do if we are moved to become Adi Da's devotee but have not yet recognized Him? Here are Adi Da's instructions:

You are all wrapped up in the patterns of body-mind, the structures of language, of thinking, the structures of presumed perception, and presumptions about the identification of things and the “world of reality”. And these are actually obstacles to the Realizing of Reality. There are psycho-physical reasons why you don’t recognize Me. If it were not for that, if you were not doing that now, your recognition of Me would be Perfect, Tacit, Un-“caused”, Self-Evident, Always Already the Case — of that Nature, therefore not temporary, not just a somehow temporarily “caused effect”.

Devotion to Me is established through listening to My Word, My Leelas, sighting My Form Bodily here. When this becomes the finding of Me, the recognition of Me, then devotion to Me is established. This Way is not established before then. Until then, you can study this Way, you can listen to the stories of My Life and Work, you can sight My Bodily Human Form, Avatarically Born Divinely here, and all that continues until there is the true recognition-response to Me. Then The Way can begin.

So in short: we can use every available means to immerse ourselves in Adi Da (including reading or listening to Adi Da's words (on websites like this one, or in His books, or through CDs and DVDs), watching videos of Him or listening to talks by Him, looking at pictures of Him, read and listen to stories about Him from devotees (on this site — both written and video — or through connecting with devotees online or in person), attending regional Adidam events or courses, visiting exhibits of Adi Da's Image-Art, visiting the Empowered Sanctuaries of Adidam, and participating in performances of Adi Da's Mummery Book), so as to open ourselves to receiving His Gift of recognition.
